Biochar has emerged as the most mature and scalable solution for long term carbon dioxide removal (CDR), with a potential of gigatons of CDR per year.
The industry is at a crossroad, and it needs now to shift up a few gears if it wants to live up to its promise and to contribute significantly to the net-zero target in 2050.
In this session we will explore some of the critical questions facing the biochar industry:
- What is the long-term potential of biochar as a CDR solution? What are the most promising geographies and sources of feedstock?
- What is the current landscape of biochar industry?
- How to engage in a sustainable way the agri-supply chains, upstream for biomass supply and downstream for biochar usage?
- What are the business models with most potential to scale?
- What are the barriers that need to be overcome in the next few years?
- How to keep high integrity and trust in what is fundamentally a highly decentralized CDR model?
- Where do we see the industry 10 years from now?

Pyrogasification is a technology that valorizes various inputs, from biomass to non-recyclable solid waste, to produce renewable, low-carbon gases which, when injected into gas networks, can be stored and substituted for fossil gas in all its uses. Pyrogasification projects for the production of injected gas are integrated into local ecosystems and contribute to the transition and energy sovereignty of local areas, while at the same time creating new outlets with short circuits for the recovery of waste that is currently little or poorly recovered. Today, the sector is becoming industrialized!

With the aim of issuing a Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) dedicated to Hydrothermal Gasification (HG) in 2024, as part of the CSF NSE (Contrat Stratégique de Filières "Nouveaux Systèmes Énergétiques), the content of this conference will be devoted to 2 major roundtables focusing on the EOI and technologies for processing the high-pressure syngas from future industrial GH projects targeted by the EOI.
Hydrothermal gasification offers a comprehensive solution and improved recovery of a wide range of biomass and/or fossil waste products, and with its production of renewable, low-carbon gas, aims to contribute to France's energy independence and decarbonization.
The year 2024 is intended to bring about the decisive turning point with the implementation of a dedicated HG EOI call to as many interested stakeholders as possible to submit "non-committal" applications for the first large-scale HG projects. The ultimate goal is to trigger a Call For Projects (CFP) with an associated support mechanism from the French government, enabling the first HG-specific experimental contracts to be carried out as early as 2027, and the gas production targets of at least 2 TWh/year by 2030 and 12 TWh/year by 2035 to be met.
At this conference dedicated to HG, the speakers will share their strategies and actions to ensure the dynamic development and implementation of their technologies and their first industrial HG projects on French soil, integrating the sequence up to the point of injection of compliant gas into the grid.
1) "Introduction and background to HG", GRTgaz 2) "In 2024, the GH sector intends to launch a Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) dedicated to HG, with a view to initiating the first industrial projects by 2027." : Leroux et Lotz Technologies, Treatech, Vinci Environnement, CSF NSE, SMAAG 3) "Solutions for treating high-pressure syngas from future industrial HG plants must be as suitable for grid injection as they are in France", Gazfio, Arol Energy, Prodeval 4) Questions - answers
